DIY: Custom Fall Wood Word Art
Fall is in the air and it's time to start decorating for the season! This fall wood art is a fun and simple craft that will accentuate your home.
Supplies:
- Wood Word (You can use any saying or use a combination of wood letters to make your own word)
- White Acrylic Craft Paint
- Gold Metallic Paint
- Bronze Metallic Paint
- Red Metallic Paint
- Multiple Paintbrushes (in a variety of sizes and points)
- Black Fine Point Paint Marker
- Light Sketching Pencil (HB or lighter)
Directions:
Step 1: Paint the entire wood word white. This will require a number of coats. It is best to wait for each coat to dry before applying the next one. It took me about five coats to cover the entire word. Luckily, acrylic paint drys pretty fast so you don't have to wait that long.Step 2: Once the white paint has dried, paint the edges with the metallic bronze paint. Once again this will take a number of coats. Don't worry if your first coat looks streaky and dull. I promise after three or four the edges will start to shine.
Step 3: Using your pencil, lightly sketch leaf shapes onto the front of your word. If you would like a template to trace from, firstpallete.com has some leaf shapes for you to download and print. You can also get inspiration from the fallen leaves in your own backyard. Don't forget to include solid leaf shapes for you to fill in with metallic paint. When sketching onto my wood word, I drew the solid leaf shapes a little off from the black leaf outlines. You can do this too or leave the leaf as one solid shape.
Step 4: Paint in the solid leaf shapes with your metallic paint. Remember this will take a couple of coats.
Step 5: Once the metallic paint is dry, draw the outlines of the leaves using the black paint marker.
Step 4: Allow to dry completely (I suggest overnight) and then add it to your fall decoration collection.
This is such good idea! Love it!!

DeleteHi! I am in your JRN 105 class. I love your blog especially because fall is by far my favorite season! I am the least creative person in the world, but your project seems like something I could do. I like the tips you post to make it easier and way less hard to mess up. Like when you say your gonna need more than one coat. That is an awesome tip for people like me because I would not know any better. Your blog is awesome and I cannot wait to see other ideas from it.
